I'm walking 30 miles in September

Hi Everyone,

I am participating in the 'Walk 30 Miles in September' for my beautiful Mum and wonderful Dad, and a charity that is incredibly important to our family, as it supports those affected by dementia.

As many of you know, dementia is a cruel disease that effects many families every day. I would like to give a little back to the charity Dementia UK, so it can go on to offer support to those who need it, as well as provide invaluable research to find treatments that can slow or even stop its progression.

Mum and Dad (Lyn and Jeff Walker) sadly passed away this summer, on July 31st and August 24th, after a five-year journey with Vascular dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. They had enjoyed a long, happy and healthy life together, creating the loveliest childhood home for me and my brother Tom in Mackerye End, Harpenden. They went on to support us bringing up our children, and spent so many days with their grandchildren, Bailey and Ted.

Both worked incredibly hard as teachers; Dad as an outstanding Design and Technology Teacher at the Royal Masonic School and Saint John Henry Newman Catholic School and Mum as a wonderfully nurturing Nursery Teacher at Aboyne Lodge School and Wood End School.

Dementia made the last chapter of their lives so difficult; taking away memories, language, mobility, problem solving skills and so much more. However, up until the end Mum and Dad manintained their dignity, kindness, grace and appreciation of love for their family and friends, with little sparks of joy in every day they lived.

If you can spare a few pounds, your contribution would mean the world to me and to all the families benefiting from this charity's support.

Thank you so much for your kindness and generosity.

 Beth x

Final Days

Saturday 27th Sep
Last few days of the walking challenge, and also a special day for Mum and Dad for their funeral service at St Helen’s. Ted and I took time to walk up to Mackerye End in the morning to remember where Mum and Dad first lived together, and also to take a moment to recall so many happy memories. The sky was incredible, with light beaming down through the clouds. We hope the day is as special as they are.

Thank you so much for donating money to Dementia UK. Half way through September, everyone had raised over £300,000 during the ‘Walk 30 Miles in September’ alone, which is amazing.
I went for a lovely walk this morning with Molly, enjoying the beautiful sunshine on the last day of summer. We sat on a hill, which Mum used to call ‘Top of the World’ overlooking Mum’s and our old family home.  I missed walking with Mum as she used to love the seasons changing, spotting the rose hips, pyracantha berries,  beautiful coloured leaves,  acorns and conkers. My lovely friend Sue  reminded me that I am now seeing it all with Mum as she’s always with me  ❤️

Just back from a lovely, sunny walk after work with Mum and Dad’s cheeky Jack Russell Molly. Thank  you so much to everyone for your generous donations. I’m sure Dementia UK will put it to great use. In the meantime,  I’ll keep on walking to see how many miles you can fit in around work!

Wow, Beth. This is inspiring. We will go out walking this weekend and try to achieve 30 miles this month as well.
